History of the winery
The family tradition of grape growing dates back to 1900. It was started by Tomaso Sontacchi, who served as a winegrower at the Vinkomir facility owned by Baron Turković in Kutjevo. From 1914 to 1932, he was the manager of the Turković farm.
His son Antun continues the family tradition. Between the two world wars, he supplied Zagreb restaurants: Novinarski dom and Obrtnička restauracija. He passed on his knowledge and love for quality wine to his son Miroslav, and then to his grandson Hrvoje.
The brothers Antun and Krunoslav are the fifth generation of the Sontacchi winemaking family. They modernized the cellar, expanded their offer and continued to cultivate and grow wine. A new cellar with a capacity of 40,000 liters was renovated inside the old farm buildings, in the center of Kutjevo, at Trg graševine 4. There is also a tasting room for 50 people, a toilet and disabled access. The winery has the largest stone wine bottle in the world.
Today, the entire Sontaki family is involved in the winery. The wines are produced with an emphasis on traditional methods. The Sontaki family’s family farm is registered as an integrated producer.
Vineyards
The Kutjevo vineyards are mostly located on the southern slopes of Krndija. Krndija describes the Požega Valley from the east. The best vineyard locations are at 250 to 350 m above sea level.
The Sontacchi family cultivates 1.5 ha of its own vineyards and 1 ha of cooperative vineyards (Pinot Noir). On the Venje and Kutjevo – Vidim sites, they grow Graševina, Portugizac, Rizvanac, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir in a ratio of 70% red to 30% white wine varieties. The wine brand "Kutjevački kitokret" is the hallmark of the Sontacchi winery.
